Weird Science, SMUT, and Guardians of the Galaxy

Weird Science

PantslessForScienceThis had to be shared. Scientists have sucessfully grown AND implanted vaginas in women. They didn’t just go around grabbing women off the street or anything, the four women had conditions where they either had under-developed vaginas or no vaginas at all. This could also be a huge advancement for people interested in gender reassignment surgery! Science is crazy awesome.

Real science is fun, but imagining fake science can be better. Jamie S. Rich and Megan Levens explore love and science in their upcoming comic Madame Frankenstein from Image Comics. It’s not directly connected to Mary Shelley’s original, but it will attempt to thematically stay true to its source material.

Our next piece of news is about Meghan Fox – who I’m including under the category of “Weird Science” because I’m not sure she wasn’t born from pubescent fantasies and computers. She had an interview with Entertainment Weekly this week about the upcoming turtle extravaganza, and I particularly enjoyed this quote about April O’Neil:

She’s more of a leader when she explores her relationship with the turtles instead of just the human companion that gets dragged along on the adventure… There’s no gratuitous skin or sexual anything. [Director Jonathan Liebesman] was really insistent on not wanting her to be sexualized or to take that sort of typical role we’ve seen women take in movies thus far, and that I’ve taken in particular.

So Meghan Fox isn’t in the movie for gratuitous sexiness? How will she know what to do without that being in her job description? This still doesn’t reassure me about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie, but I guess I’ll tryyyy to ease up on Meghan Fox in the future.

Smut

Here are all the covers of Lumberjanes #1 - a plaidtastic comic featuring adolescent girls, summer camp, and monsters. It counts as smut because I was drooling while looking at them. Also, the Smut Peddler Kickstarter Campaign broke $80,000 in five days – showing that people everywhere enjoy lady-created smut. Take that pron industry.

Dragon Age fiction may not count as smut to 99% of the world’s population, but I’m pretty excited about news of Patrick Weeks’ Dragon Age: The Masked Empire novel. There is also an Andre the Giant comic book coming out. Available May 6th from First Second Books, the comic will cover the life and legacy of our beloved Andre. D’aw.

VampireTildaSwintonIf reading isn’t your jam, get excited for Only Lovers Left Behind, a movie starring Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton as bohemian vampires in Detroit. I wish they were really vampires, so both actors could continue making movies forever. Honestly, I didn’t think I could love either actor more. I was wrong!

If you are still not satisfied with my media suggestions, try one of these indie video games. The game dev behind Cave Story is releasing a new game next week, and you can play Cave Story dev Pixel’s Kero Blaster releases next month, and you can play a short free prologue called Pink Hour. This games stars a pixelated pink office lady who must find a missing document to avoid The President’s anger. You’ve only got 3 lives so be careful!

Nina Freeman, on the other hand, released How Do You Do It - something made in Flixel for the Global Game Jam in conjunction with Emmett Butler, Jonathan Kittaka, and Deckman Coss. The game features a young girl attempting to make her barbies have sex after watching Titantic and explores an important question of young sexuality (how do you do it?).

Guardians of the Galaxy

RocketRaccoonYou’ve probably seen the trailers for Guardians of the Galaxy by now and wondered to yourself “Wtf is that a talking raccoon?” Yes, yes it is. Rocket Raccoon is completely weird (even for comics) but Comics Alliance has put out a visual history of Rocket Raccoon so you no longer has to wonder too much about his origins. I’m still waiting for someone to explain Groot to me.

Perhaps we’ll get even more backstory on the Rocket and Groot’s weird-ass (technical term) friendship in Dan Abnett’s Rocket Raccoon and Groot Steal the Galaxy! novel. The book is set to hit shelves in July, so you don’t have to wait too long to get your “I am Groot” and “Blam – murdered you” jollies.

EVEN MORE Guardians of the Galaxy swag is headed our way this year, with Guardians of the Galaxy Legos and Pop! Figures!

GoTGLegos

There are other sets beside’s this one, but I’m probably only buying the ones with Rocket Raccoon in them. That is pretty much all I have to share in Guardians of the Galaxy news, but I’ll leave you this picture of Karen Gillan as Nebula just for fun.
